COLLISIONS OF SLOW ELECTRONS WITH ATOMS,

Abstract

The paper reviews the results of the investigations on collisions between electrons and atoms which have been recently carried out in the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR. The excitation of hydrogen atoms including exchange and strong coupling between three levels, the excitation of highly excited hydrogen atoms and the ionization of a hydrogen atom are calculated. The results of calculations for the elastic scattering and excitation of atoms in alkali metals (lithium, sodium, potassium, and cesium) by electrons having the energy up to 5 ev are presented. The cross sections of a series of transitions in atoms of rare gases (neon, argon) treated by electrons were found. (Author)
