AN IMPROVED METHOD FOR THE PREPARATION OF FECES FOR BOMB CALORIMETRY.

Abstract

A freeze-drying method has been developed by which human feces can be prepared for the determination of total calories by bomb calorimetry. Weighed, homogenized fecal slurries are prefrozen and lyophilized to dryness by means of a freeze-drying apparatus. Advantages of this method over the vacuum oven - drying method include: (1) removal of a greater percentage of moisture content from the sample initially, (2) total time required for drying of the sample reduced from 48 hours to 16 hours, (3) no need for grinding since the freeze-dried sample is in the powdered form, and (4) absence of objectionable odors during processing of the samples.
