BOREAS EXPEDITION, 27 JANUARY - 1 APRIL 1966(WITH SOME DATA FROM OTHER PARTS OF THE ZETES EXPEDITION).

Abstract

The purpose of this expedition was to demonstrate that the characteristics of the low-salinity intermediate layers of middle latitudes are derived not directly from the sea surface in high latitudes but by vertical mixing which takes place beneath the mixed layer, just as the warmer waters that underlie the cold surface waters in high latitudes in winter have become warm by vertical mixing beneath the mixed layer in middle latitudes. The data from this expedition have demonstrated this proposition.
