GAS CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF THE PYROLYSIS PRODUCTS OF ORGANIC MATERIALS,

Abstract

Gas chromatographs of the pyrolysis products of three styrene polymers, having molecular weights of 20,000; 35,000 and 230,000 were prepared. Peaks were identified for benzene, toluene, and monomeric styrene. Another peak was obtained which was assumed to be acetylene, ethylene, or a combination of the two. Peak area analysis revealed no significant difference between the polymers at the same pyrolysis temperature but an increase in the amount of lighter gaseous components at the higher pyrolysis temperature. This investigation has indicated that gas chromatographic analysis of pyrolysis products may be potentially useful for the characterization of lubricants, paints, plastics and other materials used by the Department of the Army.
