MIDLATITUDE CLOUDS IN THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE,

Abstract

A strong interest in upper atmospheric clouds as indicators of the stratospheric circulation has resulted from new knowledge obtained through Meteorological Rocket Network synoptic exploration of that region. A year-long observational program conducted by missile range meteorologists and several U. S. Weather Bureau stations indicates that natural occurrence of clouds visible to the unaided eye is not a characteristic feature of the region which can be efficiently observed. Shortcomings of the available data and characteristics of a more effective observational system are discussed. (Author)
