In the summer of 1963 in the Astrakhan Region there was an outbreak of disease of the Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever type. For laboratory investigation of the cases and elucidation of the etiology of the disease, the following specimens were collected in Astrakhan foci: blood of patients with Crimean hemorrhagic fever collected in the acute stage of the disease; organs from fatal cases of Crimean hemorrhagic fever; Hyalomma plumbeum plumbeum ticks (known vectors of Crimean hemorrhagic fever); and blood serum from patients with Crimean hemorrhagic fever and from healthy people in rural areas of the region.
