AN ANALYSIS OF THE ELASTIC DEFORMATION OF CYLINDERS WITH CONSTRAINED ENDS UNDER AXIAL LOAD,

Abstract

It was shown that the boundary conditions that are normally applied to the elastic deformations of cylinders and prisms with plane, constrained ends and free lateral surfaces are incorrect at the intersection of the plane ends and free surfaces. The assumption of continuity of strain leads to erroneous results in predicting the apparent compressive modulus of such a prism as a function of its geometric dimensions. By allowing a strain discontinuity at the boundary of the free surface, one can derive solutions to the problems of deformations of right circular cylinders and infinite rectangular sections which predict measured values with a high degree of accuracy.
