WATER-JET FEASIBILITY STUDY: A PROPULSION SYSTEM FOR BARGES, TUGS, AND OTHER PONTOON-BASED FLOATING STRUCTURES.
Abstract
The study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of replacing the presently used 06DH and 9D-200 outboard propeller drive units with a waterjet propulsion system. A 'best choice' waterjet system is presented and declared feasible for use with pontoon-based floating structures. The possible methods of waterjet propulsion for the low speed, high load application are presented. The basic parameters and theory are defined, and a technique of component selection is developed. The topics of pump, engine, water intake, and jet control are considered in detail. Cost and performance comparisons between the outboard propeller drive units and the proposed waterjet system are included. (Author)
