CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF LABILE SPECIES.

Abstract

The primary objective of the program was the study, at room temperature or below, of the chemical properties of species stable at high temperatures. The most interesting class of substances which falls in this category are the atomic species, which for the main part have not been studied as reactive species. The major effort was expended in the study of vaporized carbon. The chemistry of monatomic C was studied in three states and triatomic C in two states. The properties of these species are now known with as much detail as any of the reactive free radicals or carbenes, and it is possible to define with some confidence the mechanistic pathways followed in the reactions of these species with the substrates.
