QUANTUM LIMITATIONS TO ELECTROMAGNETIC SIGNAL MEASUREMENTS.

Abstract

The report describes work on the development of an effective statistical communication theory for optical communications. Photodetection statistics have been computed for an optical illumination consisting of a cw signal and narrowband noise and a formula obtained for the information transmittable by an optical detector. Quantum electrodynamics has been used to evaluate the statistics of a narrowband optical communication system and to compute the statistics of a coupled mode system. The report summarizes this work and lists publications during the grant period. (Author)
