ELECTROFORMING OF THE COMPOSITES OF NICKEL REINFORCED WITH SOME HIGH-STRENGTH FILAMENTS.

Abstract

Composites of nickel reinforced with up to 35 volume percent (uniaxially aligned) tungsten filament (.0005 inch diameter) and 11 volume percent (randomly distributed) alpha-Al203 whiskers, have been prepared by electrodeposition from sulphamate bath. The tensile properties of these composites, after annealing at 650 degrees C in H2 for one-half hour, were found to be a linear function of the volume fraction of the reinforcement. The feasibility of electroforming boron filament-Ni, glass filament-Ni and SiC whiskers-Ni composite has been demonstrated. Effect of these inclusions on the microstructure of electrodeposited nickel before and after annealing, and the nature of fracture of these composites have also been investigated. (Author)
