SURVEY OF RESEARCH ON TYPOGRAPHICAL EFFECTIVENESS.
Abstract
Research on the effects of typographical and environmental variables on effectiveness of printed materials is surveyed. Effectiveness is defined as ease and accuracy of reading words, phrases, connected text, and numerals in context. Variables considered are: (1) type style or design; (2) interactions of charcter size, length of line, and interlinear spacing; (3) form of type; (4) mixtures of different forms, styles, and compositions; (5) size of margins and inter-column spaces; (6) distance to reader; (7) levels of illumination; (8) background vs. character surface reflectances; (9) background vs. character colors; (10) curvature of surface; (11) angular alignment of printed surface to line of sight; (12) angular alignment of lines of type to line of sight; (13) vibration; (14) prediction and measurement of 'comprehensibility'.
