STIFFNESS DESCRIBER OF CONICAL AND HEMISPHERICAL FILAMENT WOUND STRUCTURES,

Abstract

This report presents a technique for determining the Stiffness Describer for conical and hemispherical filament wound structures. The expressions that were derived are extensions of the expressions presented in AFOSR Scientific Report 65-2214, which was restricted to cylindrical filament wound structures. The Describer, portrayed here, uses the same mathematical modeling of filament wound structures and shell strain energy expressions as the previous report. The departure from the previous report came in relating the radii to the axial dimensions prior to integrating the strain energy expression. (The previously reported expressions for a cylinder had a constant radius, regardless of axial dimensions). The technique described in this, and the preceeding report, provides the dynamicist with means to analyze filament wound structures composed of cylinders, cones, and hemi-spheres.
