ATTENUATION OF SOUND BY SPHERICAL SHELLS.
Abstract
The study of acoustic attenuation at low frequencies by thin spherical shells was continued beyond the initial analysis by Goodman and Stern (J. Acoust. Soc. Am., 34:338, 1962). Experimental measurements were conducted both in air and in water. Numerical evaluation was extended to include the first-order coefficient. For metallic shells immersed in either air or water, the first-order coefficient is larger than, and exhibits interesting fluctuations at lower frequencies than, the zeroth-order coefficient. As a practical consequence, pure zeroth-order behavior is difficult to observe even in the laboratory and most measurements exhibit the combined effects from several orders. (Author)
