CYCLOPROPANONE IV,

Abstract

The chemistry of small unsaturated molecules of unusual structure is of interest partly because of their great potential as intermediates in organic syntheses. The paper reports a relatively simple, high yield synthesis of such a compound, cyclopropanone, by the addition of diazomethane to ketene in methylene chloride solution at -78C. A surprising difference in reactivity towards different nucleophiles is shown by cycloprononone and ketene; the former is attacked by methanol at least ten times faster than the latter, but ketene is more the reactive of the two towards diazomethane.
