SHEAR RESISTANCE AND EQUATION OF STATE FOR NONCOHESIVE, GRANULAR MACROMERITIC SYSTEMS.
Abstract
The development of the concept of the 'liquid' and 'solid' states of large-particle (macromeritic) systems is traced briefly, and the consequences with respect to the shear resistance of such systems are pointed out. One of these is the establishment of a Van der Waals type of equation for the internal friction of noncohesive granular systems in function of their void ratio and the respective minimum and critical void ratios. Experimental verification of the pertinent concepts is shown by reference to data found in the literature and by adduction of new data in graph form, especially on binary, ternary, and continuously graded systems. The importance of these concepts for various practical and scientific problems is indicated. (Author)
