AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE FORMING OF A GASEOUS CENTERBODY FOR USE IN A HYPERSONIC DIFFUSER.

Abstract

A feasibility study was made of the formation of a gaseous centerbody through the interaction of an injected flow field with the concentric primary or tunnel flow field. Such a virtual body could be utilized as a diffuser centerbody. Various injection system parameters were studied, viz. injection angle, Mach number, volume flow distribution and total weight flow. From these studies it was determined that by a judicious choice in injection system configuration, a virtual surface could be formed in a hypersonic air stream. Thus, a firm basis was established for further development of the concept of the gaseous centerbody and its application to hypersonic wind tunnel diffusers. (Author)
