THE THERMODYNAMIC-DYNAMIC SYNTHESIS OF A STEAM-OPERATED FREE-PISTON AIR COMPRESSOR.

Abstract

The report describes the preliminary design of the experimental model of a steam-operated free-piston air compressor. The steam cylinder is 2.25 inches in diameter x 3-inch nominal stroke, compressor cylinder 6.5 inches in diameter, pressure ratio = 4, and the expected capacity 85 std cfm. The steam admission is governed by inlet ports in contrast to an inlet valve which was assumed for the original design. The design of exhaust ports remains as in Phase I. In the first section, the computations required for the determination of work parameter and frequency for the new version are represented. The subsequent sections are devoted to the analysis of work parameters at off-design operations and stability studies, and to the design of exhaust and inlet ports. The computed frequency of the new version is 2060 cpm. (Author)
