'EMERGENCE' AS OPPOSED TO 'THE PROLIFERATION OF CONSTRUCTS',

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to examine the framework underlying the formation of theories which use constructs representing oppositional forces and the utility of viewing the non-predicted results of construct interaction as 'emergent' properties or as a requirement for new constructs. It is concluded that constructs of the 'inhibition' type refer to an entire domain of negation of a phenomena rather than a single referent. This leads to non-predictability. It is shown that neither the production of new constructs nor an assumption of 'emergence' is logically pure. Choice between approaches must be based on esthetic and pragmatic criteria. (Author)
