A PRELIMINARY PARAMETRIC STUDY OF A WATER-AUGMENTED AIR-JET FOR HIGH-SPEED SHIP PROPULSION.

Abstract

An analysis was made of a high-speed ship thrust device utilizing a water-augmented air-jet. This type of thruster was named the 'mist-jet.' Each major component of the system, i.e., air compressor, water injection unit, and two-phase nozzle is examined and areas needing further investigation are noted. Results of the analysis are discussed and presented in graphical form in terms of propulsion efficiency. Propulsion efficiencies of the order of 50 percent and reduced system specific weights in comparison with other propulsion systems are indicated. (Author)
