EXPERIMENTAL AND ANALYTICAL DETERMINATION OF THE INDUCED DRAG DUE TO BILGE VORTICES.

Abstract

Wind-tunnel experiments on an ogive of infinite bilge curvature were performed, using in a first series of tests a total head tube and in a second series a hot-wire anemometer, to study the production and growth of bilge vortices. The characteristic dimensions of the vortices are determined and the circulation computed. These quantities are used to evaluate the drag induced by the bilge vortices. The analytical expression for the drag due to a pair of vortices is also derived in both cases when the vortex pair is alone or influenced by the presence of a second vortex pair. The results obtained show that the vortex drag is about 14 per cent of the surface drag. (Author)
