WIDTH-MODULATED PULSE-DOPPLER WAVEFORMS FOR CLUTTER REJECTION.
Abstract
A single short radar pulse provides rejection of clutter distributed in range on the basis of range resolution only. A coherently integrated train of equally spaced pulses (a pulse burst) can provide rejection of clutter by both range and doppler resolution. The doppler rejection capabilities of a pulse burst can be greatly improved either by amplitude modulation of the burst or, to a somewhat lesser extent, by pulse-width modulation of the burst. For example, a burst of thirty pulses can be width modulated to provide 28.5 db more rejection of clutter at a doppler shift half way between ambiguities than can a single pulse with the same range resolution. With a different width-modulated thirty-pulse burst, greater than 20 db more rejection of clutter than that provided by a single pulse can be obtained over a wide region of clutter doppler shifts. Linear frequency modulation of the pulses of a pulse-width modulated burst appears to be unattractive. (Author)
