HIGH-CURRENT-DENSITY CATHODE-RAY TUBE ELECTRON SOURCE.

Abstract

A preliminary life-test was conducted on a conventional-sized (0.359-inch diameter) cathode containing the tungstate cathode material which was to be principally investigated in the program. The results of the life-test show that the cathode system possesses substantial life-potential. The cathode operated in excess of 9000 hours at 980C while a continuous emission current density between four and five amperes per sq cm was drawn. These current densities were the maximum which could be safely drawn for the size of cathode tested, with respect to the dissipation capability of the anode used. A considerable part of the effort in the program centered around developing a suitable mechanical design for the UHR-CRT (ultra-high-resolution cathode-ray tube) cathode. A number of configurations were investigated and, either for mechanical or thermionic considerations, were abandoned in favor of improved designs. The basic types of assembly which were studied included an insert-type assembly, a cup-cone design, and, finally, a design employing a cap over the basic cup-cone configuration. Emission and life-tests in sealed-off, gettered planar diodes were the criteria first used to evaluate prospective cathode designs and processing techniques. These were followed, or were accompanied in parallel in some cases, by emission and life-tests in actual sealed-off cathode-ray tubes. (Author)
