ASTROGEODETIC INSTRUMENTATION AND FIELD SERVICES ENGINEERING.

Abstract

The design, fabrication, and testing of a Celestial Photometer developed to enhance the techniques of geodetic stellar photography are described. The development, fabrication, and testing of a second-generation balloon-borne optical beacon are also delineated. Additionally, the effort supplied under the general task of field engineering support is detailed. The design philosophy of the Celestial Photometer is that of supplying a calibrated telephotometer capable of measuring atmospheric extinction with an accuracy of one-fourth stellar magnitude, or better, to the geodetic stellar camera team in the field and of detecting background light 'noise' as a function of limiting exposure to hold plate densities to an acceptable level. Predictions of optical beacon or passive satellite exposure through the existing atmosphere can be made through photometric measurement of one or more known stars in the photographic field. (Author)
