BACTERIAL PATHOGENS IN FECES OF SMALL ANIMALS IN THE PHILIPPINES.

Abstract

A small animal survey was conducted during the early months of 1966 on and around Clark AB in the Philippines. The intestinal contents of all of the animals collected, including rats, bats, birds, amphibians and reptiles were cultured for the presence of potentially pathogenic bacteria. No pathogens were isolated from the birds. 10% of 62 bats, 12% of 253 rats and 13% of 52 reptiles and amphibians were found to be harboring pathogenic bacteria. Bacteria isolated were from the following groups: Salmonellae; Arizona; Alkalescens-Dispar; Providence; Bethesda-Ballerup; Coagulase positive Staphylococcus aureus. (Author)
