ON THE OCCURENCE OF ANGIOSTRONYLUS CANTONENSIS IN WILD RATS IN THE PHILIPPINES.

Abstract

A small animal survey was conducted on and near Clark AB during the early months of 1966. Rats collected during this survey were examined for the presence of the rat lungworm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which has been shown to be the causative agent of eosinophilic meningitis. The parasite was found in 24% of the rats which were trapped in three specific areas, namely Lily Hill and the Jungle Survival School on the military reservation, and in Baler, Quezon Province in Southern Luzon. The rats trapped in all other areas were found to be free of the parasite. Three genera of rats were found to be harboring A. cantonensis, including Rattus mindanensis, R. exculans and R. everetti.
