SURFACE WAVES IN CHANNELS OF FINITE DEPTH.
Abstract
A discussion is presented of the feasibility of a steady flow consistent with the linearized problem, and a study was made of the corresponding radiation conditions. Such a flow is found to be possible in both the supercritical and the subcritical cases but not in the critical case. In the supercritical case the disturbance dies both upstream and downstream; in the subcritical case, in general, it does not vanish downstream. A study was made of solitary and periodic waves which result when a stream of uniform flow is disturbed by an arbitrary variable pressure on its free surface. Explicit wave solutions are obtained by considering two special pressure distributions. A study was made of the progressive wave solutions of the zero order shallow water equations. In the subcritical case, a wave was obtained with a single hump and a single hollow on the two sides of the point of disturbance. In the critical and the supercritical cases, periodic waves were obtained. (Author)
