PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIES OF A Z PINCH FOR PLASMA ACCELERATION, VOLUME II.

Abstract

A linear pinch apparatus with provisions for photographing the radial and axial view was constructed. The axial view was used to study the dynamics of the pinch, and the radial view to study formation of Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. The sheath dynamics indicated that a 'porous piston' model is required to explain the experimental data. Rayleigh-Taylor instability theory was used to demonstrate that the sheath was almost completely ionized. (Author)
