APPROACH TO EQUILIBRIUM OF A MANY-PARTICLE SYSTEM,

Abstract

One of the fundamental problems in the statistical mechanics of irreversible processes is to understand why and how most systems of many-particles approach equilibrium. In the last few years remarkable progress has been made in this understanding especially by Van Hove and his coworkers on the one hand and by Prigogine and his school on the other. In the present article we shall review their works, pointing out the linkage between them. The content of the article includes: Density operator; Hamiltonian; Master equation; Initial condition; Generalized master equation (Van Hove's equation, Prigogine-Resibois' equation, Interrelation); Approach to equilibrium.
