PHYSIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF THE BROWN ADIPOSE TISSUE.

Abstract

Recently it was claimed that brown adipose tissue is a major site of heat production during arousal from hibernation (Joel, 1962; Smith + Hock, 1964), in cold-adapted rat (Smith, 1962, 1964) and in new-born rabbit (Dawkins + Hull, 1964). In order to elucidate fundamental mechanism underlying cold adaptation, particularly in the view-point of non-shivering thermogenesis, detailed studies on the role of brown adipose tissue in cold adaptation should be undertaken. The present investigation is purported to clarify not only the physiological role of brown adipose tissue but a possible role of this tissue in the endocrine homeostasis. (Author)
