CONCEPT AND USE OF IONOSPHERIC SOUNDERS.
Abstract
Ionospheric sounders, installed to operate over selected high frequency communications paths, have failed to provide the operational gains expected. Hq AFCS examination of this problem has clearly identified several prevalent errors that require correction. These errors severly limit productive use of the sounders. The report covers: (a) The concept and minimum procedures required for operational use of sounders by sounder and technical control personnel; (b) sufficient background data so that supervisors (Maintenance, Telecom Officers and Squadron Commanders) can properly examine their units' operational use of sounders and thereby evaluate the relative competence of their subordinates in sounder maintenance, operation, analysis and use of sounder data in frequency selection.
