A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF POWERPLANTS FOR SPACEFLIGHT,

Abstract

At present, the chemical fuel rocket engine is the sole practical power source for extraterrestrial navigation. However, compared with the chemical fuel rocket, there may be important advantages in using an atomic fuel or an electrical rocket engine; but there remains a series of technical difficulties to be overcome and the idea of the atomic engine is still far from being practically applicable.
