A MOBILE TEMPERATURE SENSING ARRAY FOR THE OCEAN.

Abstract

A submarine-mounted vertical array of thermistor beads was designed, constructed, and tested. This array measures the temperature at several levels, say in the thermocline. The thermistor beads are normalized in a novel way and operate on linearized half-bridges, the output of which is recorded digitally. The vertical motion of the array is compensated. The depth of several isotherms is obtained by an interpolation scheme, using a high speed computer. The variation in depth of an isotherm is related to internal waves, whose frequency spectra can then be estimated through further analysis. (Author)
