THE ORBITAL ELEMENTS OF COSMOS 5 NEAR THE BEGINNING AND END OF ITS LIFE.

Abstract

The R.A.E. orbit-improvement programme was used to determine the orbital elements of Cosmos 5 (1962 nu 1) near the beginning and end of its life in orbit. About 250 observations were used in the analysis, of which 80 were rejected as unsuitable. It was found that the orbital inclinations were not all accurate enough to give a reliable value for the rotational speed of the atmosphere, which was the main purpose of this study. Better results would have been obtained had some good Southern-Hemisphere observations been available. (Author)
