POWER DRIVEN STAPLES.

Abstract

It was concluded that the data derived from the lateral resistance test, or other small scale tests, used herein, cannot be utilized to determine the suitability of the fabrication fasteners in cleated plywood boxes. Based on observations accumulated during fabrication of test specimens and boxes, and performance of these tests, particularly performance of the boxes during rough handling drop tests, the following conclusions concerning the fasteners tested herein, can be made: (a) The preformed staple and wire stitch, defined and applied, as described herein, can be used as satisfactory alternates for the specified nail, for the fabrication fastening of cleated plywood panels, Specification PPP-B-601a, with both 1/4 in and 1/8 in plywood. The 7/16 in preformed staple, when used, is to be applied from plywood to cleat direction only. (b) The 'auto-nail' fastener should not be used with plywood less than 1/4 in thick. When used, it should be inserted into the panel parts from cleat to plywood direction only. (c) The 3/16 in crown staple, as presently constructed, is not adequate for use in panel fabrication for the PPP-B-601a box, because of the comparative thinness of the legs (18 gage - .0475 in diameter). Staple dimensioning practice should be established and standardized on a government-industry level. This should also be consistent with government specifications which are currently undergoing revision. (Author)
