AKS REPLENISHMENT CAPABILITY. DETERMINATION OF MATERIALS HANDLING REQUIREMENTS OF THE USS ALTAIR (AKS-32) FOR UNDERWAY REPLENISHMENT OPERATIONS,

Abstract

Cargo handling operations aboard the AKS type ship are a vital factor influencing schedule making and the overall performance of the ship in underway replenishment. In view of the magnitude and multiplicity of the problems involved in cargo handling aboard AKS ships, the implementation of improved materials handling devices and techniques was a logical and necessary subject to be explored. An analysis was made of the prevailing conditions reported by the USS ALTAIR (AKS-32) by an operational survey aboard that ship during an underway replenishment operation in Mediterranean waters. The results obtained from this survey showed a definite need for improved materials handling devices and mechanized equipment, and established the overall requirements for the types and quantities required by the ALTAIR.
