Abstract
The monograph deals with ocean currents which are due to thermohaline circulations, gradient flow and drift generated by the prevailing wind together with studies on the clues leading to their structural configurations. Factors governing the excitation of these motions and the underlying physical laws are first expounded, followed by a treatment on the characteristics of the resultant phenomena. During the ensuing discussion, motion is first taken to be in a steady state (which is typical of the posterior period in the development of balanced flow). Unsteady-state behavior which is typical of the anterior period during the formation of balanced flow is then traced. Oceanic circulations are the main theme of this treatise, in which currents in shallow seas, straits and estuaries are considered in the latter parts. In addition to an explanatory description of the circulations in the upper and middle oceanic layers, motions in the deep layers are also discussed.
