ION REACTIONS IN MATRICES.

Abstract

The research was concerned with the basic steps in the chemical behavior of a special class of substances known as positive ions. The experimental technique has consisted of surrounding these ions at low temperature with neutral molecules and observing what chemical products are formed. Prototype experiments have shown that collisions of the positive ions, H(+), Ar(+), and CO2(+) with cyclopropane, in condensed phase, at liq. N2 temperature, result in the isomerization of cyclopropane molecules. Since positive ions of chemical interest are likely to be paramagnetic, measurements were made of the electron paramagnetic resonance, of prototype species at liq. He temperature and higher. Provisions were made for generating paramagnetic substances in situ. (Author)
