EVALUATION OF UNIT LOADS IN UNDERWAY REPLENISHMENT ABOARD THE USS RIGEL (AF-58).

Abstract

The report deals with the development and evaluation of the unit load concept of materials handling as applied to reprovisioning at sea. The purpose of the study is to determine the feasibility of fork truck - unit load operation within the reefer stowage compartments aboard the newly designed USS RIGEL (AF-58). Results of testing aboard the RIGEL indicate that the concept of moving unit loads with fork trucks aboard the RIGEL is feasible. The loads were maneuvered within the one lower hold level, hoisted in nets and transferred to the receiving ship, the USS LEYTE (CVS-32), without difficulty and with a minimum of manpower. However, the transfer took place under ideal weather conditions and the cargo was consigned to one ship. (Author)
