ADDED MASS OF CYLINDERS REPRESENTING TYPICAL MODERN SUBMARINE CROSS-SECTIONS.

Abstract

The cross sections of typical modern submarines in way of the superstructure and/or sail are idealized to a circular arc 'bump' and vertical fin combined with a circular main hull. This boundary is mapped onto the real axis of the complex plane using a series of mappings including the Schwarz non-linear transformation for curvilinear polygons. The new flow is analyzed and the two-dimensional added mass calculated, by means of series expansions, for horizontal and vertical motion. The results are compared with other known solutions and with those derived from making various simplifying assumptions, and appear reasonable. Specific examples are worked out and conclusions drawn.
