CONGENITAL FUNNEL CHEST IN CHILDREN.
Abstract
Children present a variety of deformities of the thoracic cage which can be classified into two main groups: congenital (abnormal development) and acquired. The purpose of this paper is to summarize clinical observations and the successful surgical treatment of congenital funnel chest in children. Funnel chest consists in the depression of the central portion of the thoracic cage and of the epigastric portion of the abdomen. This depression is due to the retraction of the sternum or to be more exact of the xiphoid. The deformity, as a rule, involves the entire costal cartilages up to the mamillary line. The deformity may be symmetrical or asymmetrical. Different degrees of depression are to be observed depending on the amount of the deformity and the age of the child. (Author)
