AEOLIAN TONES PRODUCED BY FLEXIBLE CABLES IN A FLOW STREAM.
Abstract
The effect of various parameters on the frequency and acoustic pressure of Aeolian tones is investigated. A set of equations for predicting this frequency and acoustic pressure is presented and their validity is thoroughly examined. It was determined experimentally that the frequency of the Aeolian tones varies with the angle of the cable to the flow. The lift and drag coefficients were found through the acoustic pressure to be 0.344 and 0.076, respectively. In an attempt to establish the critical length, it was found to be less than 7 diameters. Finally, the dependence of Strouhal number on Reynolds number was found to be 0.262-0.018 log R sub N by experimentation for Reynolds numbers from 550 to 24,000. (Author)
