THE EFFECTS OF VELOCITY PROFILE ON THE FLOW IN A STRAIGHT CHANNEL WITH INJECTION,

Abstract

The very simple sensitive flow that occurs in a straight channel subject to a cross-flowing jet is presented. This case has been treated previously under the assumption of uniform velocity profiles. The present paper extends this treatment using the more realistic assumption of non-uniform velocity profiles. However, the complex, detailed solution of the Navier-Stokes equation is not required in order to obtain useful information regarding this case. Instead, only the basic concepts of conservation of momentum and energy are utilized, along with the definition of two form parameters describing the non-uniformity of the velocity profile. Using only these tools, an insight into the effects of the velocity profile is obtained. (Author)
