STUDY OF SOLUBILITY OF TERNARY MIXTURES OF WATER/3-METHOXYBUTANOL-1/SODIUM TETRABORATE-DIOL CONDENSATES.

Abstract

The object of the study was to investigate the solubility phenomenon of ternary mixtures of water/3-methoxy butanol-1/sodium tetraborate-diol condensates as applied to hydraulic brake fluids. The effect of molar composition upon this phenomenon was studied. In some concentration ranges homogeneity or heterogeneity depended upon the order of addition of the three components. Solubility data was developed and curves were constructed illustrating the solvent/solute relationship. Possible explanation of the unusual findings were theorized and supporting evidence obtained and presented. Results elucidate some instances of previously unexplained appearance of sediment in stored hydraulic brake fluids. (Author)
