ELECTROCHEMICAL OXIDATION OF SATURATED HYDROCARBONS.

Abstract

A study was undertaken to define and analyze the factors controlling the catalytic activity of platinum black toward the anodic oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons. The objective was to develop a correlation between the physical characteristics of a black, which should be a function of the preparation technique, and its electrochemical activity. The pattern of the work was as follows: (1) the preparation of many samples of platinum black over a wide range of carefully controlled conditions; (2) the characterization of the black; (3) the preparation of a practical electrode structure; (4) electrochemical activity testing: ((a) over-all activity (steady state measurement), (b) intrinsic activity (transient measurement)).
