TRANSIENT ENERGY TRANSFER IN A RADIATING GAS DURING EXPANSION.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were the following: (1) Study the transient cooling by thermal radiation of a spherical mass of gas during expansion. (2) Study the unsteady energy transfer in a hot core of a radiating gas which is expanding into colder surroundings which are capable of absorbing and emitting radiation. (3) Study the effect of incident radiation flux (from some external source) on the transient energy transfer and motion of a radiating gas. The purpose was to predict the state of the gas (i.e., its pressure, density and temperature distributions), the local velocity, the local radiation flux and the position of the expanding boundary as a function of time.
