ON THE AHLBERG-NILSON EXTENSION OF SPLINE INTERPOLATION: THE G-SPLINES AND THEIR OPTIMAL PROPERTIES.

Abstract

A new discussion of the properties of 'the splines of interpolation' of Ahlberg and Nilson, 'The approximation of linear functionals', J. SIAM on Numerical Analysis, June 1966, with particular emphasis on the important question of the unicity of the solutions of the several problems considered. Conditions for unicity are easily found once we realize that these extended spline functions, here called g-splines, are designed to generalize the interpolation problem first studied by G. D. Birkhoff in 1906. (Author)
