DEVELOPMENT OF FEASIBILITY MODEL AIRBORNE FLIGHT INSPECTION GLIDE SLOPE SENSOR SYSTEM.

Abstract

The objective of FAA Project No. 341-001-07N, Contract No. FA65WA-1328, was to determine the feasibility of producing an airborne glide slope sensor system which would provide accurate representation of transmitted glide slope signals for flight inspection. The glide slope signal parameters to be evaluated were: radio frequency signal strength, total depth of modulation, and the difference in depth of modulation (DDM) of the two audio tones. Development work took the form of improvements and additions to an existing solid-state glide slope receiver, the Wilcox Model 800B. Two of these units were modified and designated as Model 800D for ultimate delivery to the Federal Aviation Agency. The two units were thoroughly evaluated in a factory test program, and compliance with desired performance was demonstrated in all significant aspects. A flight test was conducted on the two units by the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center. Results of the flight test indicated quite satisfactory performance. It has therefore been concluded that production of glide slope sensors having the specified accuracies is feasible assuming certain manufacturing precautions are observed. (Author)
