SEDIMENTATION IN THE KARA SEA,

Abstract

The study is based on investigations conducted by the NIIGA and AANII during 1948-1959 and some other sources. The composition and quantity of sediments is discussed by the typical areas, such as the Novaya Zemlya Depression, the trough of Sv. Anny, Western Plain, Central Kara Sea Elevation, trough of Voronina, Severnaya Zemlya Coastal Belt, Taymyr Plain, Southern Shallow Plain and Southwestern Hillocky Plain. A brief description of the bottom terrain is followed by the influx of sediments by river discharge and coastal erosion. The detritus is analysed with regard to granulometric composition, such as gravel, sand, clay and mud and the minerological composition. At last, the rate of sedimentation in various areas of the Kara Sea is discussed.
