NON-INTERCEPTING GRID STUDY - TUBE TYPE DX-321.
Abstract
The non-intercepting grid design studied in this program was the field effect tube where the grid (or gate) is essentially a frame through which the emitted electrons are directed, by a parallel magnetic field, on to the anode. Electron transit time was investigated for its effect on UHF applications of the tube. Trade-offs between power and maximum frequency were found to result in electrode structures and spacings of very small size at UHF. This requires very high current densities. 40 amperes per square centimeter were employed to experimentally produce 12KW output at 300 mc peak with 20% efficiency. For use at UHF additional recommendations include grounded grid (gate) circuit, coaxial construction, use as an amplifier, or an oscillator with feedback independently adjustable both in phase and magnitude.
